valentine, you're my bestest friend...

One of my fondest memories with my children was the night before the school Valentine's party. We always had the best time picking just the right one for each of their friends and watching them address each one in their little scribbled writing still brings a smile to me. Carefully checking each name off the list so they wouldn't forget a friend. At the end of the day, they would burst through the door showing me the "best" ones they recieved. We would spend the evening reading them all together and hearing their excited stories about their unforgettable day. What treasured moments...

I remember the anticipation I felt as a child too, decorating a shoe box covering it with big red glittery crayon hearts and cutting a hole in the top for the reciept of the next day's sentiments. Funny, but I can still remember my favorite one, I was in third grade and a boy named Eldon Suter gave me a real card with a little lamb on it. Not just a paper trinket, but a real store bought open-me-up card! I felt like the most adored girl in school. Most likely that was the moment when my princess syndrome started because he made me feel so special that day... looking back, he was my first case of puppy love
So, here are some simple but fun memory makers for your family to enjoy.

Family Fun has the best ideas I've seen for kid friendly crafts. With recipes, video how to's, party games and more, you'll find everything you need. It's hard to choose but one of my favorites is "Kernel of Love" Made like a popcorn box and taped to the back is a healthy alternative to sugary sweets. Be sure to check out all of their projects here.

Speaking of healthy alternatives, why not use veggies to create stamps. With a little paint and imagination, carve potatoes or carrots into heart shapes and let the kids stamp away!

A cute poem for your valentine vegetarians...perhaps you could incorporate verses from it into your stamped creations.

Cabbage always has a heart; Green beans string along.
You're such a cute tomato, Will you peas to me belong?
You've been the apple of my eye, You know how much I care;
So lettuce get together, We'd make a perfect pear.
Now, something's sure to turnip to prove you can't be beet;
So, if you carrot all for me, let's let our tulips meet.
Don't squash my hopes and dreams now, Bee my honey, dear;
Or tears will fill potato's eyes, While sweet corn lends an ear.
I'll cauliflower shop and say, Your dreams are parsley mine.
I'll work and share my celery, So be my valentine...

By the way, do you know why is cabbage the most loving vegetable? Because it's all heart
